Curriculum
Scripps Family Medicine provides a rigorous curriculum that produces residents who are well-rounded and prepared to work in an underserved community. All residents begin their training with a one-month Community Medicine rotation that introduces them to the resources available in the San Diego County South Bay. The interns then go on to complete rotations in medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, surgery, and behavioral medicine. During the 2nd and 3rd years, residents will continue to complete intensive rotations in ICU, ER, Geriatrics, Cardiology, Night Float, Dermatology, and several Elective months. At Scripps Mercy Hospital Chula Vista, we are "unopposed," being the only residency program at the hospital, and family physicians have OB privileges. We see a very broad range of pathology and disease given our underserved population.

Highlights
PGY-1: Community medicine month completed as a class, key rotations (including surgery and OB) unopposed, rotations in several hospitals provide diverse learning opportunities and exposure. Interns also spend a portion of their pediatric rotations in our high school clinic, and continue their extensive adolescent medicine curriculum throughout all three years.
PGY-2/PGY-3: Night float system minimizes week night call, flexible curriculum and elective time to pursue interests, amazing relationships with specialists who love to work with family medicine residents and teach, hospital environment that appreciates family medicine residents and encourages involvement with commities and policies.
Community and adjunct opportunities
In addition to our core curriculum, residents are encouraged to spend time in the community and beyond to become involved in more socially active opportunities. Every resident completes a Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) project involving proactive initiatives in bettering the Chula Vista community. In the past, residents have volunteered at local high schools, begun pregnant teen support groups, and promoted better diets for children. Some residents have formalized these projects and presented them at national conferences.

International Oppurtunities

Our residents have a total of 4 months of elective time during the PGY2 and PGY3 years. It is during this time that residents often choose to spend time internationally or to supplement their training in more specific areas. Spending time in any place across the globe is very flexible; in the past, residents have gone to Eritrea, Fiji, Costa Rica, Peru, Thailand, and many others!
